Blog 6: TikTok & Business

With this assignment I decided to work with the business I have been working with for my two projects. I have already planned on creating TikTok’s for the Omaha Beef so I was able to come up with an idea to spread awareness of arena football. When I think of posts for sports, I usually think of edits. I love to watch cool edits with music over highlights of past performances. My favorite is a short video of Derrick Rose hitting a game winning shot with the song “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1” by Kanye West playing in the background.

This gave me the idea of doing a video like that for this TikTok. These types of videos usually get many likes on social media platforms due to them being intriguing and letting people relive a moment they watched in slow motion or with some other type of editing. Since I had an idea in my head I got to work. I found clips from arena football games and saved them to my phone. Next, I put the clips in an iMovie in the order I liked. The next step was to create an introduction with me in it. I decided to not speak and only point to text that I had placed in the video. After creating the introduction, I then had to find some type of music to include. In my mind, the only fitting type of music was Hip-Hop/Rap. This lead to me to choose a song with an up tempo beat. I decided to go with “Sold Out Dates,” by Gunna and Lil Baby. This seemed to fit perfectly with the video. After having the video created on the iMovie, I saved it to my phone and uploaded it to TikTok. The video below is the final result.

When talking about this year I think it is safe to say that it has been a disaster. The year 2020 so far has been terrible. In the first month the world was experiencing the rise of the global pandemic, COVID-19. Also, there was talk of WWIII possibly starting and Australia was experiencing wildfires unlike we’ve ever seen. Also, we lost one of the greatest basketball legends of all time, Kobe Bean Bryant, along with his daughter and others on January 26th. This all led to viral post about the year 2020 being terrible. TikTok was full of videos covering everything that has happened in 2020. The biggest one being the pandemic that has hit everyone in the world. We are now forced to confined ourselves and close schools and businesses. The year 2020 is definitely a year we will never forget. It is one for the ages, one for the history books.

This led to viral post online on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and every other social media and news site. The world has been shook with this historical event. The news is constantly covering it every single day. Along with that, President Trump has been holding press conferences discussing the coronavirus. The posts about this topic lead everywhere from serious to jokes. Most people on Twitter and TikTok will post memes covering the virus or funny relatable videos covering the topic. This leads to some relief in peoples minds but is still a serious issue. It is insane how fast this pandemic hit, changed the everything we know and the way we live in an instant.

The news will cover the topic and post certain ways to protect yourself from the virus and your loved ones. While other people will make memes about the virus. Not only the virus itself, but also the President. Recently, he talked about drinking Lysol to fight the virus and was obviously serious about it. Memes surfaced the internet along with news sources, President candidates, and governors sending out messages not to inject yourself with cleaning supplies. The best thing to do is to stay home and wait for more information to be released about the virus with testing and wait for a vaccine so we can all go back to living our normal lives once again.

There are many shows today that are all the same. Everything is copycat within the American film industry and the movies/shows have become boring. At least to me anyway. However, I am not saying that they are bad, however, I just have grown to a different form of entertainment. That is anime.

Anime is a style of Japanese film and television animation, typically aimed at adults, but is also aimed for everyone. The thing about anime is that there is so much of it and everyone has something else to offer. This is why I love it so much. It is another form of entertainment with short or long stories having you go through a roller coaster of emotions experiencing art. The thing with creators in anime, is that they aren’t focused on all of the money. They aren’t greedy. They care about the work put in and take tons of risk in order to create something beautiful in every way, rather than just to the naked eye.

However, I haven’t always thought this way. Until recently I thought anime was stupid and for weirdos who live in their parents basement. However, one of my friends told me to give Naruto a watch. I decided to watch thinking that my brother who is also my best friend enjoys watching anime as well. This led me to curiosity to try it. Once I started the long journey of Naruto, I couldn’t stop. It was a dark time in my life where I was battling depression and the show really helped me cope with it. The main character grew up alone with no parents while everyone in his village despised him because he had what you could call a demon for people who haven’t watched the show, sealed inside him. However, he never let that justify him as he kept going with the goal to become the leader of the village in which he ends up doing so at the end of the second series called, “Naruto Shippuden.” After experiencing this story I wanted to try something new. So I continued looked around the internet and saw there is an astonishing amount of anime. The list seems to never end and every single one is different. Some may be similar but they take those similarities and make them their own. That is something American films/shows lack in my opinion and that is diversity. Although, some shows are amazing from America ,however, these shows form Japan are on another level. I recommend taking the time and giving it a chance. Everyone I have told to give it a shot always brush it off saying it’s stupid at first. Although, once they give it a shot they come back to me talking to me about it constantly. It all goes back to not judging a book by its cover. I say just give it a shot.

With starting up my first company I want to focus on making the most of my budget given to me. I plan to create a lot of post. The type of post will vary of course. Mixing it up is something that I would like to do. I would like to start off with a certain theme for the day and continue it the whole day and then start a new one. For example, I may focus on outdoor and/or travel bags one day, and then the next focus on sports bags such as sports gear and sports teams. Also, I intend to focus on having sales. That will get people’s attention and want to come and check out deals. I plan on having sales throughout the whole weekend. I will start them Saturday and continue to make multiple posts about more and more deals. I believe that is the main money factor. I plan on having free shipping throughout the whole weekend with some other deals on Saturday and possibly Friday. However, on Sunday, I plan to end the weekend sales with on huge sale. Something like 50% or 60% off with the free shipping added onto that sale. I believe this is a no brainer deal to take advantage of in real life. 50% off a $40 bag of the quality that BUDHI sells. I would do that in a heartbeat. I would gladly spend $20 for a product like that. I have to be smart with where I post and what time I post also. The time of the day will play a big factor along with adding promotions for posts on media sites. I plan on only promoting on one social media and then posting to a few others that correlate with the times. Also, I don’t want to make too many posts on a single day. That could end up being too much for a consumer and get them annoyed. Posting at different times throughout the day on different sites is also smart though so that they can see our product at one time during the day, and then a few hours later see it once again on another media outlet. That may give them the thought to check them out. However, too much could drive them away, so I plan to only post 2-3 times a day. Absolutely no less than two or more than 4. I can’t wait to get started.

February 19th, 2020, Midland University had a Career Fair. It was held in Hopkins Arena and held from 11-2. I was only able to show up briefly due to classes that day and having to lift for football after. However, I got a great experience. There were many booths set up with many other businesses. The first place I stopped was Nebraska Game and Parks. I have loved outdoors since I was a kid so I figured I’d see what this business was about. I introduced myself and she asked me to tell her a bit about myself. I responded with, “I am a sophomore here at Midland University and I am double majoring in Sports Marketing and Management and General Business, with a minor in Digital Marketing. Also, I play football here and I’m looking into running any type of business in the future, that be related to sports or not.” I told every booth that same answer as well. She continued to explain who they are and what they do. Basically, they tend to wildlife here in Nebraska and hold state parks in the best long-term interest of people and those resources. I asked about their social media presence and she responded that they have a social media and are active on it. She said the marketing side of the department will handle all types of posts and getting out all the events and volunteer work posted out for the public. She went on to explain how much volunteer work they are always looking for. She said I could call office number and they would help me walk through the process. Also, I spoke with Mutual of Omaha who were looking for some potential candidate interest in working full-time for them. They had me fill out some contact information on their i-pad and spoke about the potential digital marketing hire. They said they weren’t really looking for interns as they don’t have much to hire but are definitely looking for a hire in digital marketing. I would’ve liked to ask more about the position like when the job would start or for more depth into the position role, however I didn’t have enough time. Along with that, the information I filled out would allow them to contact me via email or text with more information about the position.

For my social media for organizations class, I was put into a group to perform an audit on a business.  The first thing we did was get together and look up all their social media platforms together. Once, we figured out everything they had, we checked their follower amount for each platform, the date of last activity, and if their branding is consistent.  After we gathered that data we began to discuss some questions we could possibly ask them. We thought about asking them about creating a snap chat, to post promotions on their story. This would allow people to gain a bigger interest and broaden their horizons.  This also could be smart because, once you open snap maps, there are blue areas that have stories, so some people could come across those. Also, we thought about perhaps suggesting an app. We noticed that other competitors have apps so it would most likely be smart to join that game.  We also came up with some goals. Such as, improving followers for each site, perhaps create videos to post on twitter to gain attention and excitement, and create a LinkedIn account. Also, Facebook seems to be their best social media platform. However, we noticed they aren’t very engaging with their followers.  Perhaps engaging more and showing that you care about your customers on a higher level than just being in the business, also outside the business. Once we gathered all the information we felt that we needed we began to sit there and wait. However, the business that we were assigned to never had shown up. So we were free to leave.  That happened to be a bit surprising considering the fact that they said they would show up. Although, there was nothing we could do about it. We decided to overlook our information we prepared and shared it all with each other so we each could have it. Once that was finished, we left. It was a bit disappointing not being able to meet with the business to go over the audit, however, that happens in life.  There isn’t anything to but continue moving forward.

The reason why I chose this class was to further my knowledge of social media and marketing.  In the future, I would like to be in the world of business. My ultimate dream goal is to one day become an NBA General Manager.  That being said, I figured taking a course like this would be a great opportunity to gain some knowledge. Knowing what it takes to have a successful social media for a business is very important.  Especially, with NBA teams. They always are looking to grow their fanbase so having spectacular social media will reach many people. Especially when it’s my time in the future, my generation will be older and the majority so it will be easy to access people with social media around my age, younger, and even some older ages.  Social media seems to be a necessity in today’s era. It seems we humans can’t live without our phones. Although, this may sound bad, however, it’s true. Figuring out how to manipulate and figure out people’s likes, wants, and interests to drive them towards what you are preaching is a great asset and tool to have. Learning more about running social media for a business will help me with my future self in order to drive people towards my business using technology.  I am very interested in what this class will have to offer. I can’t wait to experience working with other businesses to help them and learn more about them. This is all an experience and I am glad to be able to have access to a course like this. It is very interesting and intriguing. I have even got to see an inside look at how sports teams market their social media. This interterm I had an internship with Creighton University. I worked with the sports marketing team and got to see how they run their team through the business side.  I was able to attend a meeting talking about improving attendance at the women’s basketball games. They spoke a lot about reaching out on social media for the student body their and reaching out to other businesses to sponsor posters and other things as such. I was even able to help provide some images for them. It was a very good experience so learning, even more, should be extremely fun.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
